About The Posse Foundation:
The Posse Foundation, a dynamic youth leadership development and scholarship program, identifies, recruits and trains student leaders from public high schools to form multicultural teams called "Posses." These teams are then prepared, through an intensive Pre-Collegiate Training Program, for enrollment at top universities nationwide, to pursue their academics and to help promote cross-cultural communication on campus. The Posse Program has demonstrated great success since its inception in 1989, placing over 2,200 students at top colleges and universities. Posse Scholars have won over $220 million in scholarships from Posse partner universities and are persisting and graduating at a rate of 90% -- far higher than the national average.

Volunteer Description:
The Posse Foundation is currently seeking writing coaches to teach one-on-one and/or co-facilitate writing sessions over the course of three months. The writing component of the training program is critical to the pre-collegiate work with Posse Scholars. These coaches will help Scholars bridge the gap between high school level writing and college level writing.

Posse needs two types of coaches:

Group Writing Coaches will meet with one Posse six times over a period of three months. The coach must meet with Posse staff to develop a creative writing workshop which should be in line with the expectations of college level writing. Group coaches should also be able to provide thoughtful and constructive feedback to Scholars based on their weekly assignments. Each coach should be available from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Each coach will work with twelve students. Time commitment: approximately 6-8 hours/week

Individual Writing Coaches will tutor individual students and provide one-on-one coaching on an as-needed basis. Coaches will help Scholars identify their writing strengths and weaknesses and provide tailored feedback on how they can improve their writing. Coaches will coordinate meeting times and locations with Scholars and provide periodic assessments of the Scholar’s progress. Time Commitment: approximately 2-5 hours/week

Qualities/Qualifications:

• Professional or significant experience in writing
• Ability to work effectively with a group and with youth
• Ability to provide clear and concise feedback on writing
• Ability to work well in a team
• Bachelor’s degree required
• Alumni from a Posse partner college is a plus
• Work in the following fields a plus: Teaching, Journalism, English/English literature faculty, Law, Published writers, Public Relations, Publishing or other fields where writing is essential to work
